I too ran into the red ring of death shortly after purchase – years (around 5) ago. You do need a few original numbers and items to have it replaced, but to be fair they tell you to hold on to that information in the instructions should something go wrong. It being a Microsoft system, I filed the paperwork accordingly for the day the ring of death would come. A few short phone calls and my new/refurbished xbox was on it’s way to me within about a week. When I asked why it had happened and explained my usage I was told not to use the tray for watching movies, as the system couldn’t handle it and overheated or some nonsense like that. Long story short, keep all your info organized because chances are it WILL crash and Microsoft knows this- that’s why they offer years of warranty/fixes/replacements. Since then the machine has been working like a charm (knock on wood).

My only gripe is with all systems these days, the games are ridiculously expensive with much shorter game play then games past. This is partly due to the fact that they realized they could release parts of the game that they would have previously included later on, for a price, and call them ‘add-ons’. The other big gripe I have with the 360 is the market place/online game play and the fact that they’re the only major gaming system that charges users for access. So you pay $500 for a system, $60 on the initial part of a game, and then another $30-$80 (estimation) on access to otherwise free content, like the ability to play netflix on your console (a service you’re already paying for).

In summation, the games are generally well done and pretty amazing, the system works rather flawlessly now that it’s been out for a while, it offers hours of entertainment for a hefty (and ever expanding price), yet one could argue that it’s worth the money because the quality is rather high and reliable (compared to it’s predecessors)- it’s an xbox.

Warning! Don’t lose your instructions, warranty card or original shipping box otherwise you can’t return a month-old playstation that no longer works. Receipt of purchase doesn’t mean anything. I guess I didn’t realize that not keeping all of the aforementioned items will cause the playstation to stop working.

I purchased this Xbox for my son for a Christmas gift and although I read about the “red ring of death”, I didn’t expect it would happen to a refurbished Xbox! I mean, if it was refurbished, what was it refurbished from since that is the big fault of the product!! I have it registered with Microsoft and already have it packaged to get repaired. Thank God Microsoft extends the warranty for this error.

I feel for my son who is a true gamer, he waited for this piece of equipment, only for it to be a piece of junk.
