As others have said, this game is very, very short, very simple, and has little replay value. The only challenge to this game is in learning the controls for the first time. After about thirty minutes or less you have those down and then you are left with one of the easiest games ever produced. This game does have some fun moments initially, but after experiencing them for the 50th time, it gets old. What is really sad is that this game had huge potential, it was based on an amazing movie, the ability to curve bullets provides a good chance for innovative gaming, and the few slow-time scenes were fun, if scripted. The problem is, the game does not have any of the wit of the movie. Every line of dialog is forced, sounding like it was written by a third-grader who just liked the swearing in the movie (this must be why Wesley apparently developed a bad case of Torette’s) and the storyline starts off well but quickly dies a horrid death due to (again) forced twists and conflicting scenes. This would have been better more as a Hitman-type game, where you had targets that you had to take out, but had to use your skills such as bullet curving and slow-time to do it, not as the third-person shooter it was.

The bullet curving could have been the best thing about this game, creating a unique fighting style, however it is so formulaic, it becomes boring quickly (lock, angle, shoot, done). There are several scenes where your adrenaline kicks in and you go into a slow-time mode where you can shoot bullets out of the air and take out the baddies, this is fun but is very scripted each time, would have been better if you could have used this ability during the normal game and could use your bullet-curving power with it.

The NPC’s are horrible as well. There are basically three types of bad-guys, once you figure them out the game might as well be over. The first is the thug, usually one hit take-down, the second is the slightly stronger thug, takes multiple bullets, but just bullet curve, then shoot when he stumbles. The third is the elite hitman, he can doge your rounds to an extent, but still is easy to take down (the melee attacks take down anything with one hit anyway). There are also a few snipers and shield troops, but they are just variants of the above. All enemies appear in a set manner, so if you do happen to die once, you will know where they are the second time. The bosses are a joke. All have a set pattern and are ridiculously easy, even the last boss.

Finally, the weapons, or lack thereof I should say. There is no variety here and I’m not sure why they even bothered with ammo limits, as I never found myself low on ammo or having to scrounge. The sniping scope was lame, hard to aim and a one shot-one kill, no matter where you hit. The fixed MG was bad, but with this one, once you figured out where to put your gun as you hid behind it, you could get the sights on pretty quickly when you pop up to aim. A cool thing would have been to be able to set up a sniper shot like in the movie, set a trap for your target, pick a sniping location, and calculate the path of the bullet (or maybe even control the round in the air). Again, more like Hitman, would at least make you think for a second.

    Pros:

    -Decent Graphics (not Great).

    -Innovative Game-Play in Places.

-Easy Achievements (A pro for some…I’m just trying to be nice, lol).

    Cons:

-Wasted Potential for a Great Game.

-Extreme Lack of Variety (guns, baddies, overall game-play).

-Horrible Script and Confused, Forced Story.

-Short (less than 4 hours for most).

-Lack of Replay-Value (even with the additional modes).

    -Lack of Online Gaming.

This game is good for a rental when you are bored and have absolutely nothing else to do for a few hours, otherwise, stay away. Play the demo, if you don’t mind doing anything but that over and over again, maybe you will like it.

    My 2¢

Beat it in three hours. Easy breezy. Great for the xbox achievements but fun factor was minimal.

The levels I was looking forward to were button cut scenes. So that was a let down.

    [...]

Fun to play through once. But nothing else to keep you playing again.

You play on medium and you get the achievement after beatin the level plus the achievement for EASY too. Whats the point? Its cool. Just not great.

Think about that word for a moment. Think about what you envision as you apply that exact word to this game. Sticky as honey and about as thick.

But there are other words I can label this game with. Generic, short, and largely boring played out scenarios/realms.

Still, I couldn’t give rank this game as low as two or even the dreaded one star for two very good reasons. One being that the game is actually fun at times and two because I only payed a five for it. Seriously, for under ten, I wholeheartedly recommend the game. Aren’t convinced? Then follow me and we’ll break it down.

    Presentation:

Graphics… are… hmmm; well they aren’t terrible and at times show some legs but the truth is the game world is so unconvincingly small you must expect far greater results here. Otherwise everything here is pretty mediocre to average. Characters (yours and the thousand no named clones of enemies) are detailed and animated well enough. The backdrops (IE environments) are so so designed and even absorb occasional environmental damage. The major stickler is however for the loading breaks and short paragraph like playable sections you almost have to wince at the thought that much larger sandbox style games look twice as good as what we have here.

One other thing worth mentioning are the cut scenes. For some reason these look atrocious whether it be the resolution or some other technological feat they somehow managed to make the game’s decent engine look far worse then you’d think possible. Seriously I’m not lying.

I always hate analyzing sound solely because either a game sounds good (or accurate) or it doesn’t. For the most part this game falls in that first spot. Crackling guns spout the correct noises and even the voice acting by the notables from the movie do a pretty good job here.

    Summary:

Graphics are like plunging both index fingers into your ears and very loudly humming the theme song to yourself as you attempt to compare what’s on display here next to the bigger dogs. Granted nothing is terrible it’s just the circumstances that make it look horrendous.

    Narrative:

I honestly wanted to skip this part only because I’m not exactly certain where and how these things fit into the universe. I’ll also be honest that I’ve yet to read the graphic novel/comic books and can only assume things based upon the movie/game. Nevertheless I’ll leave this mostly alone.

From what I do understand though is that the main star (Wesly gibson) here sets out after the events that took place during the movie by investigating his lost heritage. This leads him past three guardians from the fraternity to ultimately seeking the answers (I assume) that range from who killed his mother to what it actually takes to kill the fanatical assassin known as the Immortal.

    Summary: /Shrug

    Gameplay:

Remember that word I mentioned? That exemplifies my initial reactions to this game. It truly feels like you’ll press the A button and essentially be stuck to a wall for good. It’s not all that hard to become detached from your impenetrable fortresses but with no real sprint button or even a means to dodge any sort of gunfire you’ll almost be stuck to a wall for 90% of the game. Things aren’t all bad however as clearly the folks at the now departed company Grin really really enjoyed Gears of war cover system and injected a…. wait for it… they adjusted it with a diagonal projection that allows the player to *gasp* jump through the game on a slant!

Sarcasm aside the cover system isn’t as smooth nor as refined as say Gears but certainly makes up for it with two specific abilities. One allows your to flank your enemies after suppressing the enemy with blind fire and circle (from cover) behind him. The other feature is the slow mo cover to cover ability which uses adrenaline. Basically it’s Wesly’s version of the (max payne) slow mo dive.

And of course the game features the coveted bullet curving that has been featured so much. Is it a unique ability? Yes. Does it work well? Kinda. Whats wrong with it? Lots.

For starters this four times out of five equals out to a instant kill button. Remember the uproar for the splinter cell conviction ability? Well this works mostly as good. My other major gripe is it somewhat reminds me of the boomerang from dark sector.

But I digress, the bullet curving does what it sets out do and does an OK job at it. It comes in two varieties to kill with. The regular (normal guns IE 9mm pistols) and explosive rounds (the sub machine gun) that kills everything with one shot and has a possible splash damage at the cost of two doses of adrenaline.

The biggest flaws in this area are it’s run time (3-5 hour) and it’s simple minded room clearing loading screen every 5 minute game design.

    Summary:

Wanted: Weapons of fate is a pretty standard third person shooter in this day and age. It has cover. It has gimmicks (curve/time slow). And like most action games these days it clocks in on the short side at around 20-30 minutes per act with about 9 acts you’re looking at a 3 to 5 hour game tops. Is it fun while it lasts? Yes. Is that good enough for you to spend less then ten on it? I’d believe so.

    Overall:

What this boils down to is a fun little weekend romp. A short fleeting experience that is not pivotal to anyone existence. It’s fun at times. It’s weak at times. There’s some mild variety in the execution (mounted gun/sniper segments and a rather enjoyable on rails SUPER slow mo sections) but ultimately begs the question. Is a three plus hour fairly generic action game worth your time? Is it?

    My grade: 65/100

I read the comic after watching the movie and then i got the game, and the universe as a whole is amazing, there is just so much story to go on. I am waiting for a sequel (but the company is gone so no sequel for this one).

I have to say all these negative reviews are relative to the game being full price.

I for one watched the movie and didn’t care either way about it but I really enjoyed the developer Grin’s previous game Bionic Commando. Everything you read is true from the other reviews but I feel many of those reviews don’t have the correct prospective.

For around ten dollars, you get a really fun, action packed shooter. From the beginning, the game throws you in the mix of a huge firefight, going rooftop to rooftop gunning people down left and right. The tutorials are simple and to the point and flows well with the narrative showing Wesley’s change from a normal guy to a trained killer.

The game is short but some of the reviews claiming to have beat this in three hours are probably playing on easy. Wanted is everything a third person shooter should be with style to spare. Unlike games like Gears of War where you have to hid behind cover and slowly advance, here you’ll find yourself zipping from cover to cover and sliding over obstacles in such a smooth natural way it’s like chaining together combos in Tekken. The controls are spot on and the curved bullets, slow mo,and death grabs are a blast and make you feel like a complete assassin badass. So, yeah, the game is short but it’s one great roller coaster ride and I have to say that I really enjoyed playing on the Killer mode to unlock more achievments.

On the negative side, the cut scenes are kinda ugly despite the regular gameplay looking really good, it’s a shame they didn’t do these with the in game models instead of this prerendered nonsense. While the game is fun, the freshness wears off and the last half of the game could have added something to make everything less rinse and repeat. The one gameplay change they do have is two gun turret sections and a few sniper shootouts. The sniper sections are alright but the stationary gun sections are lame and it took me a couple tries to realize you have to look up to avoid the bullets coming at you. There’s also a completely awesome airplane shoot out which was really gripping and ridiculous, I just wish there were more set pieces like this.

All I can say is that I didn’t particularly care for the movie, but the cool style and breezy gameplay won me over. I took me a couple days to play through this and what’s here is really good. For the price on Amazon, you really can’t go wrong. You can literally buy this for the price of a downloadable game and the airplane sequence is worth the price of admission alone.
