I should say at the outset that I have only played a few missions on the Single Player aspect of this game, and found them to be dull and very cut and paste from virtually every other shooter out there. That being said, Frontlines: Fuel of War brings one of the most challenging, deepest and expansive multiplayer experiences you will find on the Xbox 360 this year. Where other popular FPS games offer maps that are at most a mile wide at most (Halo 3, Call of Duty 4), the maps in Fuel of War get as big as ten miles across, with flyable jets and helicopters, Tanks, Light Tanks, Anti Aircraft Artillary, Humvees, and more. You can have 50 people playing on the same map and still have room to breath, room to tactically manuever and flank with your squad. What makes this game truly fun for me is that there is no “God weapon” that lets a single player dominates the match. Like a chess-game, Fuel of War offers players a mixture of player classes and equipment that allows them to counter any other player’s kit or vehicle. Snipers, tankers, and helicopter pilots are unkillable in other games, but not in Fuel of War. A smart player working with their dquad can take any objective or silence any threat on the map, if they play their cards right. This is a great game and a very fun game. Highly recommended!

We live in a country where energy is almost as important to us as oxygen, and taken for granted just as much.
But, the big question is what if? What if our abundant energy resources suddenly became more and more scarce?
Would other countries start to eye us (here in Alberta) for our Oil reserves? Would wars be fought over the dwindling reserves?
Frontlines: Fuel of War is about that very topic. What if the reserves were all but gone? The major superpowers would end up going to war over the few resources that are left. Of course the game is set many years into the future, but with the way we’re consuming our natural resources, it’s a frightening glimpse into a very real possible future for mankind.
In the game you play a member of the Stray Dogs, a heavily armed and well trained squad whose job it is to secure strategic locations throughout the game in order to help the Western Collation defeat the Red Star.
Ok, let’s get down to the meat of the review.
It’s your typical Xbox 360 first person shooter game, with all the usual bells and whistles that you’ve come to expect from this type of game. Instead of the regular health meter, your screen turns red, your heartbeat speeds up and your breathing becomes laboured the closer you come to dying.
Unlike the other games I played, the controls were somewhat different from what I’ve grown used to. So, better check your game manual before you dive in or you might find yourself dying a few times before you get the hang of the controls.
Speaking of dying, don’t let it happen too often. You only get a limited number of re-spawns per level. I never used them all, but I did come close a couple of times as I played. I don’t know what would happen if I used them all, but I am making an educated guess here that you’d probably have to restart the entire level.
Now, with many of the first person shooters that I’ve played recently, you’ve typically been quite limited to the number of weapons you could carry and use at any one time.
Frontlines steer away from this trend. Instead of the usual two or three weapons, you could cycle through at least eight, if you had a chance to pick up various weapons that were left around on the battlefield.
The downside is that you couldn’t pick up any of the weapons that the enemy dropped upon their untimely demise. That was one of the drawbacks of the game for me.
The second problem with weapons is, unlike many other games I’ve played, you couldn’t pick up ammunition from fallen foes… instead you had to find ammunition caches that were infrequently scattered across the playing maps. Typically they were located in the various objectives that you had to secure.
You also had a fairly limited number of weapons of which to use. An assault rifle, the grenade launcher, an anti-tank weapon, sniper rifle, pistol, grenades and demolition charges.
However, the one thing that set it aside from the other games I’ve played over the past three months is the fact that you could get various types of remotely controlled drones to use.
These weapons typically came in two types: airborne and land based. Of course it broke down even further than that. Some of the airborne mini-helicopters could be used on strictly suicidal missions, where you flew them into place and detonated them with devastating results, while others were armed with missiles that you could use to soften up the enemy resistance.
Likewise with the ground based drones. One type was nothing more than a bomb on wheels which could be used with truly devastating results, while another was armed with a powerful machine gun.
Of course the enemy could fire at and destroy your weapons, and you have to keep an eye on signal strength… if you let the drone get too far from you, you’d lose control and the enemy would have some nice target practice.
Sorry, I totally forgot about the sentry guns that you could place and they’d work wonders on any hapless foe that happened to wander too close to them. But, once again, these weapons could be taken out by enemy fire, so choose where you place them wisely.
The other feature that was used in this game, but poorly handled in this reviewer’s opinion, was vehicles. Many times throughout the game you have the opportunity to pilot APC’s, Tanks and even a helicopter.
The problem I had was controlling the vehicles! The controls were poorly done in my opinion, and if you weren’t careful to keep your vehicles main body (such as when you were driving the tanks) pointed in the direction you wanted to go, when you moved you could very well find yourself driving sideways, or even in the opposite direction you were planning on moving!
This was quite frustrating, and I found more often than not my vehicle was getting shot out from underneath me because of this.
By the way, the controls for the drone’s works on this very same principal so you have been warned.
On a final note when it comes to combat… the old adage is true. A head shot will take out your enemy with a minimum expenditure of ammunition. And besides, when you see their helmet go flying through the air, it’s a lot of fun!
The maps were large and varied, but mostly consisted of ruins. Very few times throughout the game you found yourself in an open area, and those times you were, typically you were at the controls of a tank, battling against Red Star tanks.
On the maps however, you had plenty of places to hide and use for cover, but this worked very well in the enemies favour as well.
Graphically, the game had some of the most beautifully rendered images that I’ve witnessed to date. Only Call of Duty 4 and Mass Effect were on par, if not superior in my view. Excellent use of not only shading, but colours and texture as well.
As I said, you typically always fought in ruins, be it refineries, small towns, or outposts. Some of the most visually impressive maps though were of the ruined launch facilities, the underground bunker labyrinth, and of course the city of Moscow itself.
Every single map had a bleak, hopeless feel to it, just as it should if you read the history or followed the cut scenes at the beginning of the game.
Speaking of cut scenes, they were incredible! The interaction between the characters, the events that took place, it was like watching a movie. I didn’t find the movement of the characters to be clunky or un-natural at all, unlike say – Turning Point: the fall of liberty. Even the animated facial expressions conveyed the way the characters were feeling and reacting to what was happening around them.
Then there is the music. Heavy, industrial type rock, something that I really enjoy. Now only if I could find the soundtrack for the game… Of course if you’re not into metal or rock, you won’t enjoy it, but even the music composed for the game was a delight to listen to as you played.
As is the case, I didn’t bother with the multiplayer mode. Although I guess you can play with up to thirty two other players in this mode, and you can choose from different types of classes. What you choose is the type of weapons load you get to play with.
Lastly, there are the achievements. I only managed to unlock 7 while I played the game, out of a possible thirty, for a score of 105 out of a possible 1000. Some of the achievements you could unlock involved beating each mission in a certain amount of time, of course multiplayer, and accuracy.
Pro’s
- Excellent graphics and huge maps.
- The ability to carry more than two or three weapons at once.
- Drones!
- Cut scenes and music, top notch.
- Intense firefights.
Con’s
- Say it with me… too damned short!
- Poor vehicle controls (including the drones, even though they were fun).
I eagerly await the sequel, as it was left wide open.

This game appears to pretty much be focused on the multiplayer with xbox live. Don’t get me wrong, the single player is fun, story line is so so, but again the multiplayer is its “bread and butter.” That being said, one would think that it would be near perfection in the multiplayer mode. It’s not. ‘
1. City of Lag
It can be difficult to find a room without lag, even with their dedicated servers specifically for this Frontlines. If you get in a room with lag, you can shoot a rocket, and see it actually take off after about three seconds. Another player and I played “ring around the rosie” unloading about three clips and trying quite a few melee attacks, until finally one blow connected. You may think I am just a horrible shot, but find me on xbox live and we’ll see! =) Once I switched around to a few different rooms, I found a good one. This room cleared up most of the issues of warfare.
2. Team Communication
This is a game based on teamwork, however the only team members that you can hear on the headset, are the members of your squad. Your squad can be no more than four people. That is a bit of an issue trying to coordinate with the rest of you other team.
3. Soldier to Soldier Combat
There are many vehicles, which are a blast! However, I wish the hand to hand combat was a bit more enjoyable. The aiming system is not so hot and sometimes it’s just difficult to connect your bullets with the opponents body!
There are a few other little glitches that I have noticed, and I hope a patch will be soon to follow. If you can find a good room (a good connection) and get use to some of the odd controls, this can be a very enjoyable title. I have found the use of vehicles to be a whole lot of fun, and has really been the reason I even play this game.

I have had a PS3 for a long time, however recently I recieved a XBOX 360. There are really few games that one system has that he other does not, with the major exceptions HALO, Gears of War and a few others. However, I had wantedthis one since it came out. It was worth the wait. Personally, at least as far as single player goes, I liked this game more than HALO. It has a very realistic plot. And while I do agree with the others, the AI is not as intense, it is more realistic. Only flaw is it kind of short

This game is so worth [...] i spent on it, i can’t believe how underated this game has been. I must say that the only con of the game is that it’s too short, other than that it’s a great game. Nothing can really compare to any of the COD games, but this one is a little gem in it’s own way. The game is non stop action, you get shot at from buildings, tanks, helicopters… you even hear the whiffs of the bullets and rocket launchers, just great!!! Note, you can also drive tanks, fly the helicopters, etc, there is a pretty good array or weapons you can use, they are usually given to you depending on the level or stage of the game that you are in. Let me tell you that the best part of the game is when you reach downtown Moscow, oh nelly get ready, it’s like the wild west, bullets flying everywhere!!

The single player is great, you wont be disappointed! Graphics are awesome, and the backdrops are very nice eye candy. You can switch out your guns for different ones of your choosing when you come across certain “special crates” scattered around any given level, which is nice because that means you can switch up your play style when YOU want too. The single player campaign is short and sweet (prob 8-10 hours play time), the story doesn’t grab you like MW2′s, but enjoyable none-the-less. Assuming that the bulk of people buying this game are doing so for the multiplayer, i’ll move on to that and devote the rest of my review to it.
I downloaded the demo for this game a little while ago and hated it. The controls were completely different then MW2 – i especially dislike that they use the right movement stick for ducking. Can’t tell you how many times i try to shoot a guy and ended up ducking and shooting at the same time. So i put it away and went back to MW2, as i was playing i realized that – “i hate this game”, i’m at the 4th prestige and have over saturated myself with it. I cant stand the quick kill quick death formula anymore, the horrible spawn system, the team selection system, and especially the lack of team work i constantly come across. There is also the infamous “MW2 law”, similar to “Murphy’s Law”, where anything can go wrong in a match and when it does, it always seems to happen to YOU. Ofcourse MW2 is a great game and a worthy purchase, but i personally have had my fill.
That being said, it was unfair to judge BFBC2 so quickly when i had put such an insane amount hours into MW2. So i picked it up again and gave it another shot…i was hooked! I was playing as a medic and realized that i actually wasn’t focused on killing people, i was running around reviving my teammates and dropping health packs to keep them going, ofcourse i took out a few stray enemies here and there. “Wow, this is different” i thought, and when i realized how many points i was racking up i liked it even more. I”m actually HELPING my team and getting a ton of points for it. That brings me to the most important aspect of the multiplayer, you are actually encouraged to work as a team, which is a nice change of pace compared to MW2. I get just the same amount of points for shooting someone as i get for reviving them. It works beautifully.
There is a leveling up system which is similar to MW2, nothing as developed though, but there is enough there to keep you coming back for more and you do unlock different sights, guns, gadgets etc… Some are just for the particular class you use i.e – medic unlocks larger health packs, but others are more general and can be used for any class, i.e – heavy vehicle perks.
The first BFBC had 2 deal breakers for me. One was their crazy health system where you jam a needle into your stomach when your health got low, which ofcourse is something you would have to do 50 times a match. The other was the lack of any kind of kill cam! It’s no fun being sniped over and over again and having no idea where the sniper is when you respawn. THANKFULLY, both of those deal breakers have been removed. Your health regenerates (no needle to the stomach required) and there is a kill cam, you don’t actually see the enemy kill you like in MW2, but you follow them around until you respawn so you know where they are and can carry out the proper justice.
Also, locating enemies is somewhat unique to this game, when you see an enemy, you have to press the back button on your controller and then a red insignia appears over their head and they show up on your entire teams map for a brief amount of time. I can’t express how gratifying it was to spot 3 snipers on a hill, press the back button, and watch them get lit up by my team – rockets, bullets, you name it, it went their way. Also, you get assit kill points for things like that, again, encouraging team work.
BFBC2 is a great game, very different then MW2 but in a good way. If you need a break from MW2, give it a try, you wont be disappointed. Again, one of the most impressive things about the multiplayer is how it rewards you for team work and incourages it. If actually playing a first person shooter AS a team, not just “lone wolfin it” while you’re IN a team, sounds good to you, pick this game up, you wont be dissapointed.
I gave this game 4 out of 5 stars because it’s not perfect. What game is? I have experienced some issues actually getting into a multiplayer match (can’t find a match, busy, error, whatever,it means that their servers are full and they can’t handle it, and several matchs have ended abruptly due to server issues. But once you actually get into a match, it’s a ton of fun.
FYI: Snipers, snipers, snipers! What is the deal, everyone and their Mom wants to be a sniper. It seems that atleast a third to half of the players in the game are snipers. Not sure why, they always have the least amount of points and seem to stay in one spot most of the game…….i digress. Switch it up!
***UPDATE (03/14/10)***
I’ve been playing this came for quite sometime (all medic, recon, and heavy vehicle upgrades have been unlocked), i must say that it has held up well, although some of its flaws are more noticeable, nothing major per say, but worth mentioning, 1st one being the most important.
1)It’s much easier to be a skilled pilot then to be a skilled engineer w/the rocket launcher.
Apache helicopters with missles are extremly unbalanced. What i mean by that is it is far to easy for a skilled pilot to get an insane amount of kills, to the point of feeling unfair because it’s so hard to take it down. None of the rocket launchers “LOCK” on, yes you can guide the rocket, but you can’t actually “LOCK” on, which is frustrating. When playing ‘rush’ on the map featured in the demo (the snow map which takes place during the day), there is a powerful Apache on that map, but you’re given a good amount of tanks which help with taking it down, so it’s not that extreme.
But……
This unbalance issue is taken to a whole new level on the map consisting of the 3 islands (with an autumn backdrop), when you’re playing ‘rush’, the defenders are given an EXTREMLY OVERPOWERED Apache helicopter when/if they reach the 3rd island. I’ve played 2 games thus far where my team was about to seal the deal and take the 3rd island when the defenders hopped in that freakin apache and annihilated everyone, it got so bad that most of my team dropped out, including myself. No point in playing any longer when you’ve died 5 times in a row because the apache is hovering over your spawn base firing rockets at you as you spawn in. I equipped the engineer class and so did half my team and we were shooting rocket after rocket trying to take it down, nothing was working. By my 5th death in a row, of not be alive more then 30 secs, i dropped out.
The first time it happend, it was extremly frustrating because my team was actually good, everyone was playing their role well, that’s why it seemed extremely unfair.
The second time, i knew the drill at this point and gave it 5min, if it wasn’t taken down in that amount of time, we dropped out. At that point, it just becomes a waste of time.
This is by far the biggest flaw i’ve found in the game. Basically, you’ve invested 20-30min to get that far in a match, then putting all player skills to the side, it boils down to who can get to the Apache first. They need to either lower the health of that particular Apache or make the rocked launcher system easier to use against it, ie-better guidance, tracking, more powerful, something! It just seems incredibility unbalanced.
2)Spawning is a lot better then MW2, but could use a bit of work.
I was playing a ‘rush’ match and my team was defending and we were actually able to jump the spawn base of the attackers and smother them the entire match, they didn’t get to set one ‘com station’ off, seemed unfair for the other team, we should’nt have been able to do that.
Also, i’ve spawned into mortar strikes twice (spawning on a teammate), that was purely bad luck on my part though, nothing against the game.
3)Match making protocol can use some work.
I’ve found it useful to hit/hold the ‘back button’ when i first get into a match because some of the time i find that i’m put on a team that only has, let’s say 7 people, compared to the other team which as 12. Or i’m put on a team where the top player has 500 pts and the other teams top player has 1600 points, usually a good measure of how “good” your team is going to be.
Again, my rating still stands, it’s a great game and a ton of fun, just be aware of the 3 island map playing rush, try to get to that Apache first, if not, be ready for game over.
Review by M. Squires for Battlefield Bad Company 2
Rating:
It’s not a bad game; in fact, it’s quite good. This review is in regards to the multiplayer as I have not completed the single player yet. I’m sure most people are primarily getting the game for multiplayer like with COD.
I’m sure there will be an influx of reviews giving the game 1 star and complaining about the graphics or comparing it to MW2. Here’s a few things to remember:
1) The environments are gigantic
2) There’s vehicles being used all throughout the map
3) Destructible environments
What does all that mean? It means that the game just isn’t going to look quite as good or have a comparable framerate as MW2. The Xbox has finite resources and when they make a game of this scale without any loading taking place during gameplay, you have to sacrifice something.
However, I wouldn’t necessarily say that a sacrifice in graphics or framerate is a bad thing. When you experience the magnitude of the giant playing fields and the destruction taking place, you should be able to quickly forget all about the smooth polygons in MW2.
Probably the biggest pro for me in this game is that it encourages teamwork. In MW2, most people are just worrying about their K/D ratio and trying to complete challenges by getting the most kills. In BC2, more points are rewarded for assisting the team an completing objectives. If this is something that intrests you and you’re sick of all the “lone wolves,” then you should definitely check this game out.
BREAKDOWN:
GRAPHICS: 9/10
AUDIO: 10/10 (It’s really quite impressive)
GAMEPLAY: 10/10
REPLAY: 10/10
TO sum it up, the graphics, gameplay and audio are really quite impressive for a game of this scale. The most important thing about this game, it’s fun. I love MW2, but sometimes I just don’t have fun playing it. Everyone gets so angry and frustrated and worried about their k/d ratio or getting their killstreak. In BC2, I feel like I’m just having a fun time and I’m getting a lof of points regardless of my kills. The only thing I’m worried about is trying to win the game rather than reaping carnage without purpose.
Also, the knife melee function is really sweet. It’s an overhead stabbing motion that feels a lot more real and intense than in MW2.
If you’re a fan of the BF series or just looking for a break from 5th prestige in MW2, you’ve got to check this game out.

This game will blow you away. It is everything MW2 wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong, MW2 is a good shooter… but not on the same tier as BC2. I will review the multilayer aspect, because that is really all I purchased this game for. That being said, I enjoyed single-player on Bad Company 1 and expect it to be at least as good in BC2.
The maps are BIG. You don’t run around a small little sandbox that has hills dividing it into separate sections that give it the impression of being bigger than it is, you run around a big map with distanced objective points. The weapons are varied, the classes are unique and all have a use in the chemistry of the team, and the game has a very balanced feel. One doesn’t choose the most “powerful” class, they choose the one that they personally like the most and it all balances out from there. The gametypes remind me of BF2 for the PC. They are polished, strategic, and rewarding. Where this game really shines is that the maps have vehicles. This means you can fly a helicopter to transport people from your main base to the other locations that you want to capture. You can also drive around in Hummers, or a tank. The tanks are powerful, but a smart player can spawn as the proper class and eliminate them. Why was Modern Warfare 2 considered a good game? What other online shooters did the 360 have? None really… that is why. Sure, Halo 3, Gears, to name a couple, but in terms of “gritty-realistic” online games, there weren’t many. Now that this shooter has made its appearance on the 360, I don’t think there will ever be any going back.
Review by S. Turner for Battlefield Bad Company 2
Rating:
Let me start by going over the good. Bad Company 2 is an amazingly fun game. While Modern Warfare 2 is a run-and-gun type game that relies heavily on stick skills, BC2 is based around strategy and teamwork. No matter how good of a shot you are, if you’re playing against a smarter opponent who’s working with his squad, you will be beaten. The levels are solid, with a more grittier feel than the first.
Besides an immersive experience, BC2 excels in focusing on multiple aspects of warfare. The player who kills the most enemies doesn’t always end up on top of the leaderboard, it’s the person who is the best team player. So if you aren’t great at shooters, you can put your focus on being a medic and healing/reviving fellow members of your team. Work as a recon spotting enemies from a distance and throwing out motion mines to alert squadmates of where enemies are. Or take up the task of an engineer laying anti-tank mines or use assault and make sure your team is stocked full of ammo. There are countless ways you can play the game and help your team.
In terms of gameplay, the flaws mostly lie in who your teammates are. You can get matched up on a team that isn’t interested in winning and just wants to sit in back and snipe the whole game. Or put into a squad that doesn’t work well together at all. The game is at its best when you are playing with people you know. People who you can communicate over the mic with and that will have the same objectives as you do in the game. I don’t want to knock the game hard in this area as this is just the life of any online game. The experience is only as good as who you play with.
With all that said, here is why I am giving it a lowly 2 stars. For as fun as the game is, you rarely can encounter a smooth, lag-free experience. The first few weeks of the game’s launch was almost unplayable. You couldn’t join games and those that did were laggy and kicked you out. This is typical for any EA/Dice game and is a warning for those preordering their products in the future. But where things get real bad is that we are now over 3 months into launch and the lag has returned at horrible levels. It has been this way for weeks now since a patch was put out. I’m sure some people don’t mind it and can still play the game, but in 2010 we should be expecting a lag free experience from our game. Especially 3 months after launch.
In a nutshell, BC2 is a terrific game. It’s just that EA/Dice has bungled the online experience so much that I’m really not playing it much anymore. Perhaps this will change over time and I’ll update the review, but having to wait over 3 months for a company to have lag-free servers is ridiculous. They can make great games, but if people can’t experience them at their best, what’s the point?

This game is everything MW2 isn’t, everything but graphics. The graphics are good but don’t beat mw2′s but i would rather have a good game than a bad game. I am sick of people ruining mw2 with cheap classes, (no help to some of the game developers.)
This game eliminates that factor, no cheap KILLS! and no over powered guns A IDIOT FREE GAME!
As for the campaign; it is good, and it isn’t bad in any way, it actually has a sort of plot rather than going to random areas in Modern Warfare 2 as MW2 has a LOT OF GAPS IN THE STORY. In BFBC you actually get to see some sort of explanation of what is happening during the game, like in game videos. Plus, it might just be me but i think some of the lines in bfbc are actually kind of humorous.
This game beats modern war 2 as the game developers knew what would ruin the game, such as overused, cheap perks in MW2. Plus you can use ACTUAL DESTROY-ABLE vehicles in BFBC’s multiplayer mode. And it just seems more real, more natural noises, no boring maps, not like dull boring environments, and cheap respawn killing that takes place during the game. Plus, now when you shot a RPG at the building it actually gets destroyed, not in a cheap way, a very realistic way.
